One month in....

Its been a month +a couple of days since the server was started, so lets talk about where we are.
The regulars that said they would "so play CS again if I setup a server" are....well, nowhere to be found. This is unsurprising to me; I've been down this road before trying to start a server back up. The truth is that not matter how good the intentions, it is an absolute *bore* to play on an empty server, slightly less so with bots, and even the most dedicated regular is not going to waste much time playing.
So where does that leave the server? Well its kind of a catch-22. You need players to run a sucessful server, but players will not usually join an empty server. In the old WON days this was easy to fix; You joined the global WON chat and did a little advertising. With Steam though, this really isn't possible anymore. Bots don't reall help either, because most people will not join a game populated by bots.
Our LAN party helped breifly, but unfortunatly the server choked the next day and the few people that were still coming around post LAN party went elsewhere. I intend to do another LAN party in a month or two, which will hopefully help. The other thing I plan to do I am not happy about, but see no alternative. It is possible to create "fake players" that are not bots. I generally shy away from doing this becase I feel its dishonest. But with no other option I think its worth trying.

Mor server changes

Hope everyone that joined during my LAN game last Friday had fun. Going to try to do another one in a month or two.
I've made a couple of server changes that will hopefully help bring players to the server. First I have turned off the bots completely. This means the server stays empty more often, but we get larger spikes when people do join. We'll try it this way for awhile and see how it goes.
Second I have changed the map rotation to the following: de_dust2 cs_office de_dust cs_italy de_aztec
and finally I have set a mp_timelimit of 120 minutes, and set a winlimit of 20. This will let the server rotate through the maps after a set period of time, without affecting gameplay if people are playing, and also not keep people playing on the same map for hours at a time (I know I get tired of a level after about an hour of play).

Small server change and upcoming LAN party

FIrst a little annoucement (for the three people reading). Until we get more users, I have disabled the chicken plugin. Its fun but also gives clients about t 30 second download when they join, which could make some people turn away.
Second I'll be having a LAN pafrty at my house on the 17th, and we will all be joining the server. So hopefully this will really drive some traffic to the server.

Well, got a little time to come online tonight and it seems the server is down.
Opened a ticket with the host, I'll post when I know more.
